How do you simultaneously look back for historical inspiration and ahead for a contemporary design solution? That question drove the design of this patio roof structure for the back yard of a 1930s French Normandy brick house in the historic Denver Country Club neighborhood.

The roof structure was desired for elegant evening entertainment on the patio and extended usability during hot, sunny summer days. The design language was inspired by early 20th century steel work in France, such as that found in train stations with beautiful interplays of arch trusses and wood lattice work, evoking perfect harmony with the architectural style of the house.

The peaked arch coming to an apex, as opposed to a barrel arch truss, created the structure for a mahogany square lattice ceiling and a standing seam metal roof. Excellent day lighting was achieved with strategically placed skylights and lattice work to filter harsh rays, and classic blown glass light fixtures put out a warm glow at night.
