Space on the run is life on the loose.
It ‘Space on the run is life on the loose’ is a sound and spatial intervention formed specifically for La Fragua's exhibition hall in Belalcázar, Spain. The hall is part of the Santa Clara Convent built in the 15th century. The floor dimension of the exhibition space is 93 feet long by 22 feet wide with a 22 foot-high ceiling. The distinctly crafted wood ceiling resembles an upside down boat hull because, as the story goes, it was constructed by ship builders who found new ways to apply their craft when out of work.
The ship builders re-adapted a process of making that not only led to an inspired solution and new ceiling type, but also suggested a reorientation of thinking and perspective. It was in this spirit of transference that I found initial inspiration for Space on the run is life on the loose.
Each aspect of the installation was brought together by redirecting a work process and using materials in ways other than how they were originally intended. My material selection was dictated by what was simply available to re-contextualize and generally misuse.
